China captain confident before opener

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-07-08 21:35

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 -- Chinese captain Zheng Zhi said on Sunday China
will perform well at the Asian Cup, but the opening match against
Malaysia will not be easy.

"Everything has gone well for us so far in our preparations. Things have
been well organized and there is a good atmosphere in the team," he said.

He noted the opening match will be tough. "We have to meet the co-host in
the opening match and that could be a very difficult test for us," he
said.

"There is pressure for us to perform. I still believe that we can do well
in this competition," said the Chinese captain.

China will play against co-host Malaysia on July 10 at the National
Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Learn mandarin - Pakistani militants snub surrender call

WORLD / Asia-Pacific

Pakistani militants snub surrender call

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-06 02:02

Gunfire and explosions rocked a besieged radical mosque in Pakistan's
capital Thursday as Islamic militants holed up in the complex snubbed a
plea from their captured leader to surrender.

Pakistani religious students surrender outside the Lal Masjid, or Red
Mosque in Islamabad wldThursday, July 5, 2007. Several explosions rang
out near a radical mosque besieged by security forces, hours after its
top cleric was captured trying to sneak out of the complex under a
woman's burqa. [AP]

The army seemed to be holding back from a large-scale assault, however.
The government was keen to avoid a bloodbath that would further damage
President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's embattled administration and said
troops would not storm the mosque while women and children were inside.

Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao said soldiers were trying to blast
holes in the walls of the fortress-like compound of the mosque and an
adjoining seminary for girls, seeking to wear down the defenders' resolve
and force a surrender without a bloody battle.

It wasn't clear how many people were holed up in the compound. The
Interior Ministry said about 30 die-hard extremists were inside, while
intelligence officials said there could be as many as 100. The military
said several hundred students also might be in the compound.

Soldiers backed by armored vehicles and helicopters surrounded the Lal
Masjid, or Red Mosque, before dawn Wednesday, a day after the start of
clashes between security forces and radical followers of the mosque that
have killed at least 19 people.

The violence brought to a head a six-month standoff between Pakistan's
U.S.-backed government and its top cleric, Maulana Abdul Aziz, who
challenged Musharraf with a drive to impose Taliban-style Islamic law in
Islamabad.

Journalists were barred from the area around the mosque, but several
explosions were heard during a period of intense gunfire before dusk
Thursday, sending a plume of black smoke into the sky.

A leader inside the mosque accused troops of firing several mortar rounds
that killed 27 female students.

"A large section of the mosque is damaged and fires have broken out in
the Jamia Hafsa (seminary)," Abdul Qayyum told The Associated Press by
telephone, coughing repeatedly. "It's total chaos here. There is smoke
everywhere and a fire in the room where we were keeping dead bodies" from
earlier skirmishes.

Sherpao insisted no mortars were fired and said the alleged casualties
were "just their claims."

The shooting later eased and the smoke cleared.

Officials said they were using helicopters and explosions in hopes of
breaking the nerve of the mosque defenders and inducing a surrender. "We
are using restraint on instructions from the president so that people
surrender voluntarily," Sherpao said.

Aziz, who was captured Wednesday evening as he tried to slip through the
army cordon disguised in a woman's burqa and high heels, said on state
television that as many as 700 women and about 250 men remained inside
the complex, armed with more than a dozen AK-47 assault rifles.

"If they can get out quietly they should go, or they can surrender if
they want to," Aziz said. "I saw after coming out that the siege is very
intense. ... Our companions will not be able to stay for long."

His comments raised the prospect of a swift resolution and a victory for
Musharraf, who is under growing pressure at home and abroad over
spreading religious extremism and his botched attempt to fire Pakistan's
chief justice.

But the cleric's brother, Abdul Rashid Ghazi, remained inside the mosque
with die-hard followers and rejected the government's call for an
unconditional surrender.

Speaking by phone to Pakistan's Geo news channel, Ghazi demanded a
guarantee they would not be arrested and said authorities must let him
move his mother and sister-in-law out of the complex to safety.

He denied claims by officials that he was using young students as human
shields. "The charges against me are forged and fabricated," he said.
"The government has been reduced to callousness."

Qayyum, Ghazi's aide, declined to comment on the statement from Aziz or
to describe living conditions in the compound, where power and water had
been cut off for days.

Deputy Information Minister Tariq Azim said earlier that some of the
1,100 supporters who had fled the mosque and seminary told officials that
Ghazi retreated to a cellar along with 20 female "hostages" and that the
holdouts had "large quantities of automatic weapons." Officials said the
militants also had hand grenades, explosives and homemade gasoline bombs.

Azim said there would be no more negotiations.

"Enough time has already been wasted. It has to be total, unconditional
surrender," he said, but added: "As long as there are women and children
inside, I don't think that we will go in."

On Thursday, seven men jumped over the mosque wall and tried to escape
through a storm drain, but were caught by troops, said Col. Mohammed Ali,
a military spokesman. He said the seven were "part of the hard core," but
provided no other details.

Since January, the clerics have defied the government by sending students
to occupy a library, intimidate shopkeepers selling Western music and
films and kidnap alleged prostitutes and police officers as part of a
Taliban-style anti-vice campaign.

In his TV interview, the gray-bearded Aziz, still dressed in a burqa,
said that his mosque has "a relationship of love and affection with all
jihadist organizations" but that it maintains no actual links with such
groups.

"We have no militants; we only had students. If somebody came from
outside, I have no information on that," he said. He denied
responsibility for calls Tuesday from the mosque's loudspeakers for
suicide attacks.

Officials said Aziz and Ghazi would be put on trial on more than 25
charges including kidnapping, incitement to murder and arms offenses,
while women, children and males not involved in crimes were being granted
amnesty.

Students emerging from the mosque Thursday said the morale of those who
remained was good, and many stressed that they left only at the
insistence of worried parents.

"They are in high spirits," Mehboob Waly said after exiting to meet his
waiting father.

Mohammed Naveed, a teenager who responded to his mother's pleas for him
to leave, said: "I came out with a heavy heart. I was scared to be
inside, but I was also scared to come out."

Like many of the mosque's students, both are from northwestern Pakistan,
an impoverished region where radical Islam is strong.

Japan minister: US A-bombs "couldn't be helped"

Japan's defence minister said on Saturday the 1945 atomic bombings on the
country by the United States "couldn't be helped" as they led to the end
of World War Two, Kyodo news agency reported.

Government officials in Japan -- the only nation to suffer an atomic
bombing -- typically express sympathy for the victims, but avoid
criticising the attacks out of consideration for Tokyo's ties with
Washington, its closest security ally.

However, Defence Minister Fumio Kyuma went further in discussing the
bombing.

"My understanding is that it ended the war and that it couldn't be
helped. I don't intend to despise the United States for it," he said in a
speech near Tokyo, Kyodo said.

"When it was dropped on Nagasaki, it was a tragedy," he was also quoted
as saying.

Kyuma, 66, said he does wonder why the United States had to use the bombs
when its victory against Japan was evident, but added that Washington may
have used them to try to prevent the Soviet Union from entering the war
against Japan.

Japan has been criticised for stressing its status as victim because of
the atomic bombings and failing to acknowledge its own war atrocities.

Kyuma, whose electoral district includes Nagasaki, is known for his
outspokenness, and he has angered Washington with a string of comments
after assuming his post last September.

Summit on Palestinian issue starts

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-06-26 01:30

A four-way summit of Egyptian, Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli leaders
started in Egypt on Monday to ease the current grave situation in the
Palestinian territories and activate the stalled Mideast peace process.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordanian King Abdullah II, Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert attend the
summit.

Means to contain a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West
Bank and transfer of aids to the Palestinian emergency government are
also expected to top the agenda of the summit.

The latest diplomacy maneuver proposed by Mubarak came amid chaos in the
Palestinian territories where Hamas seized control of Gaza by violence
and Abbas, in response, sacked the Hamas-led unity government and formed
an emergency government led by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Ousted Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneya on Sunday slammed the
summit, saying it will bring nothing to the Palestinians and accusing
Israel of boosting the difference among the Palestinians by supporting
the emergency government.

Roma buy full rights to Pizarro from Inter

MILAN, June 20 - AS Roma midfielder David Pizarro is now fully owned by
the Serie A side after they came to an agreement with Inter Milan, who
had previously held half his registration.

Roma said in a statement on Wednesday that the deal was worth 5.75
million euros ($7.72 million).

The Chilean was instrumental in helping Roma finish second behind
champions Inter in Serie A last season. He spent the 2005/06 campaign
with Inter having previously been at Udinese.

Italian media speculated that the deal could have paved the way for
Roma's Romanian defender Cristian Chivu to go to Inter.

However, Roma later issued a statement saying they were not in talks to
sell their main defender and that the discussions with Inter were only
connected with the Pizarro deal.

MADRID, Spain - Robinho will play for Real Madrid in its Spanish league
title-deciding finale after receiving permission from FIFA on Wednesday.

The Brazil forward was meant to join the national team on Tuesday in
preparation for the Copa America, the South American championship
starting on June 26 in Venezuela.
Though clubs are required to release their players 14 days before the
start of a major tournament, Madrid will not have to after the Spanish
football federation received word from soccer's world governing body
allowing Robinho to play against Mallorca on Sunday.

Madrid is tied with FC Barcelona with 73 points. Madrid will clinch its
record 30th league title - and first in four years - with a victory since
it leads its Catalan rival on head-to-head results.

Brazil gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday for its June 27 opener
against Mexico. Robinho trained with his Madrid teammates on Wednesday.

Study: Liver cancer breakthrough found

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-04 13:34

CHICAGO - For the first time, doctors say they have found a pill that
improves survival in liver cancer, a notoriously hard to treat disease
diagnosed in more than half a million people globally each year.

The results in a multinational study of 602 patients with advanced liver
cancer are impressive and likely will change the way patients are
treated, cancer specialists including the study authors say.

Patients got either two tablets daily of a drug called sorafenib or dummy
pills in the study, which started in March 2005. Some patients are still
alive, although on average, sorafenib patients survived 10.7 months
versus almost 8 months for those on dummy pills.

That type of survival advantage "has never happened" with liver cancer
"and is a major breakthrough in the management of the disease," said Dr.
Josep Llovet, the lead author.

"That may not sound like a lot of time," but for liver cancer, "this is
actually a quite impressive gain," said Dr. Nancy Davidson of Johns
Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health. "It is the first effective
systemic treatment for liver cancer, which is such a huge problem
internationally."

Sorafenib attacks cancer with a targeted double-barreled approach. It
zeros in on malignant cells themselves and cuts off the blood supply
feeding the tumor. It is believed to work on tumors within the liver and
those that have spread elsewhere.

In the study, tumors didn't shrink or disappear but in many cases they
also didn't grow.

"You are not curing the disease but you are delaying the progression of
the disease significantly and strikingly," said Llovet, of Mount Sinai
School of Medicine in New York and Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain.

The study was halted early, in February, because of the good results, and
patients on dummy pills were switched to sorafenib.

"This is a very good step forward in this disease," said Dr. Emily Chan
of Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Results were prepared for release Monday in Chicago at the American
Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting.

cretary Robert Gates on Sunday offered China
briefings on the US missile defence system to reassure them that it does
not threaten China's nuclear deterrent.

His remarks, at the end of a two-day conference on Asian security,
followed a top Chinese general's criticism of defences being developed by
the United States and Japan to protect against North Korean missiles.

"I'm not sure why they are so worried," Gates said. "Just as with the
Russians, we would be pleased to sit down with them and talk about the
capabilities and technical characteristics of this system and its
limitation.

"There may just not be a clear understanding on the part of the Chinese
about what we have in mind can and cannot do," he said.

Lieutenant General Zhang Qinsheng, the chief of military intelligence of
the People's Liberation Army, objected to the US-Japanese missile defence
project in a speech Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue on regional
security issues.

Zhang's concerns echo those of Russia, which fiercely opposes US plans to
deploy interceptor missiles in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic to
protect against missiles from Iran.

To overcome Moscow's opposition, Gates in April offered the Russians what
he said was an unprecedented partnership in missile defence and
inspections sites in Alaska and California.

Asked whether the United States would offer the same to China, Gates told
reporters, "I think if the Chinese were to express an interest in it we
would certainly take it seriously."

He said the US system was designed to thwart limited attacks by rogue
states or terrorists, not to defeat a large-scale threat of the kind
posed by the long-range missile arsenals of Russia and China.

"So anything we can do to provide transparency on that point and help
people understand the capabilities and characteristics of these systems,
we're prepared to do it," he said.

Gates is trying to encourage greater interaction with the Chinese
military, in part to avoid miscalculations as it undertakes a major
build-up of its forces.

Zhang said China was prepared to establish a "hotline" between the US and
Chinese defence ministries, meeting a long-standing US objective, and
that China was making gradual progress on US demands for greater
transparence.

But mistrust between the two countries is high.

A Pentagon report last week detailed China's push to acquire advanced
warships, submarines, aircraft and missiles, saying it would allow China
to project power far beyond its shores and alter regional military
balances.

Zhang, who called the Pentagon report "unreliable," raised it on the
sidelines of the conference with General Peter Pace, the chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"The Chinese are not happy with our depiction of their armed forces,"
Pace said.

"I recommended that they invite the authors of the report to China to sit
down and have discussion about what it is they think we see about them
that they don't see about themselves. And just get it on the table, in a
very open way, for discussion," he said.

"The way ahead from my standpoint is more discussion, more transparency,
if they want to have an impact on reports in the future," he said.

Viagra may aid jet-lagged travelers - study

researchers who gave it to hamsters made to feel like rodent
globe-trotters. [Reuters]

WASHINGTON - The male impotence drug Viagra may be useful for treating
jet lag as well, according to Argentine researchers who gave it to
hamsters made to feel like rodent globe-trotters.

The researchers manipulated the schedule of turning lights on and off to
induce jet lag in the laboratory animals, they reported Monday in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Adult male hamsters given Viagra, also called sildenafil, recovered from
jet lag up to 50 percent faster than hamsters that were not given it, the
researchers said.

The scientists stopped giving the hamsters the highest dose they had been
using in the experiment due to a certain side effect.

"However, we used the intermediate dose for the rest of the experiments
because at that dose animals did not manifest the effects of
sildenafil-induced penile erections," they wrote.

Flying across multiple time zones can confuse one's sleep-wake cycle,
resulting in the condition called jet lag, marked by insomnia, sleepiness
and difficulty concentrating.

Researchers Patricia Agostino, Santiago Plano and Diego Golombek of the
Universidad Nacional de Quilmes in Buenos Aires gave doses of Viagra to
the hamsters at night, then switched on bright lights six hours early to
simulate eastbound flight.

They judged how well the hamsters adjusted to the changes by observing
when they began running on exercise wheels.

The drug helped the rodents cope with jet lag only when given before the
equivalent of an eastbound flight, not the reverse when they delayed
turning on lights to simulate westbound travel, the study found.

The researchers said the findings suggested that Viagra could be useful
to help people cope with jet lag or shift work. They said the dose needed
for such uses could be lower than the one used for treatment of erectile
dysfunction.

Viagra interferes with an enzyme that lowers levels of a naturally
occurring compound that plays a role in the regulation of the circadian
cycle, the body's internal clock, the researchers said.

Viagra is marketed by Pfizer, the world's largest drug maker. The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration approved it to treat erectile dysfunction in
1998.

Sniper rampage in Idaho leaves 3 dead

MOSCOW, Idaho - A sniper sprayed dozens of bullets on a courthouse,
killing a police officer and wounding a sheriff's deputy and a civilian,
then apparently killed a caretaker and himself Sunday in a nearby church,
police said.

Moscow Police Department Detective Rodney Wolverton views a makeshift
memorial set up for slain Moscow Police officer Lee Newbill at the
intersection of Van Buren Street and Third Street in Moscow, Idaho,
Sunday, May 20, 2007. [AP]

Investigators believe the shooter deliberately fired into an emergency
dispatch center inside the Latah County Courthouse late Saturday to lure
people into the line of fire. The officer was killed as he rushed to the
courthouse, and the deputy helped pull the officer out of the way before
being shot, said David Duke, Moscow's assistant police chief.

Shortly after 6 a.m., three SWAT teams entered the First Presbyterian
Church and found the bodies of the shooter and another man, Duke said. An
assault rifle, ammunition and spent shells were found next to the
gunman's corpse, he said.

The shooter died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to
the head, Duke said. His body was found in the sanctuary, and the body of
another man was found in the church office. The second man also dead of
gunshot wounds, Duke said.

Authorities did not release either man's name, but the church's pastor,
Rev. Norman Fowler, identified the victim inside the church as Paul
Bauer, a sexton believed to be in his 60s who lived at the church.

Police said the gunman started shooting from a parking lot across from
the courthouse shortly after 11 p.m. A hail of more than 30 bullets
ripped through the county's dispatch center, Duke said. Dispatchers were
moved to the jail area of the courthouse.

"Whoever the shooter is wanted to draw people to the courthouse," Duke
said. "When officers responded, he did open fire on them."

Lee Newbill, the first officer at the scene, was hit around 11:35 p.m.
Saturday, Duke said. Newbill had served with the police department since
March 2001 and is the city's first officer killed in the line of duty.

Deputy Brannon Jordon, a 17-year veteran, was shot shortly after midnight
as he took cover behind a tree after pulling Newbill out of the line of
fire, Duke said. Jordon was in serious condition with multiple gunshot
wounds, the assistant chief said.

Authorities did not release the name of the injured civilian, but said he
lived in the neighborhood and had gone outside after hearing the
gunshots. The man was undergoing surgery and was in stable condition.

Police had no information about the gunman's motive.

"He was just shooting at anybody he could," Duke said.

Four empty magazines were found outside the church. Duke initially
estimated that 75 shots were fired, but later said it was not clear how
many shots the gunman fired.

None of the officers who responded returned fire, Duke said.

Officers surrounded the church, which is across the street from the
courthouse and nestled in a residential neighborhood near downtown and
Moscow High School. A final shot was heard from inside the church about 1
a.m. Sunday, Duke said.

Streets in the area had been barricaded and residents had been told to
stay inside their homes.

With the church still a crime scene late Sunday morning, members of the
congregation shed tears for Bauer and prayed for the other shooting
victims, including the gunman, at a service in a building on the nearby
University of Idaho campus. They said Bauer was a constant grandfatherly
presence at the church and was always smiling.

Moscow, a community of about 20,000 people, is 80 miles south of Spokane,
Wash.

WHO criticized for neglecting evidence

(Agencies)
Updated: 2007-05-08 16:49

LONDON - When developing "evidence-based" guidelines, the World Health
Organization routinely forgets one key ingredient: evidence. That is the
verdict from a study published in The Lancet online Tuesday.

The medical journal's criticism of WHO could shock many in the global
health community, as one of WHO's main jobs is to produce guidelines on
everything from fighting the spread of bird flu and malaria control to
enacting anti-tobacco legislation.

"This is a pretty seismic event," Lancet editor Dr. Richard Horton, who
was not involved in the research for the article. "It undermines the very
purpose of WHO."

The study was conducted by Dr. Andrew Oxman and Dr. Atle Fretheim, of the
Norwegian Knowledge Centre for Health Services, and Dr. John Lavis at
McMaster University in Canada. They interviewed senior WHO officials and
analyzed various guidelines to determine how they were produced. What
they found was a distinctly non-transparent process.

"It's difficult to judge how much confidence you can have in WHO
guidelines if you're not told how they were developed," Oxman said. "In
that case, you're left with blind trust."

WHO issues about 200 sets of recommendations every year, acting as a
public health arbiter to the global community by sifting through
competing scientific theories and studies to put forth the best policies.

WHO's Director of Research Policy Dr. Tikki Pang said that some of his
WHO colleagues were shocked by The Lancet's study, but he acknowledged
the criticism had merit, and explained that time pressures and a lack of
both information and money sometimes compromised WHO work.

"We know our credibility is at stake," Pang said, "and we are now going
to get our act together."

WHO officials also noted that, in many cases, evidence simply did not
exist. Data from developing countries are patchy at best, and in an
outbreak, information changes as the crisis unfolds.

To address the problem, they said, WHO is trying to develop new ways to
collect information in poor regions, and has proposed establishing a
committee to oversee the issuance of all health guidelines.

The Lancet study -- conducted in 2003-04 through analyzing WHO guidelines
and questioning WHO officials -- also found that the officials themselves
were concerned about the agency's methods.

One unnamed WHO director was quoted in the study as saying: "I would have
liked to have had more evidence to base recommendations on." Another
said: "We never had the evidence base well-documented."

Pang said that, while some guidelines might be suspect and based on just
a few expert opinions, others were developed under rigorous study and so
were more reliable.

For example, WHO's recent advice on treating bird flu patients was
developed under tight scrutiny.

Oxman also noted that WHO had its own quality-control process. When its
1999 guidelines for treating high blood pressure were criticized for,
among other things, recommending expensive drugs over cheaper options
without proven benefit, the agency issued its "guidelines for writing
guidelines," which led to a revision of its advice on hypertension.

"People are well-intended at WHO," Oxman said. "The problem is that good
intentions and plausible theories aren't sufficient."

It remains to be seen how WHO's 193 member countries will react to The
Lancet study, released just before WHO's governing body -- the World
Health Assembly -- meets next week at UN headquarters in Geneva to decide
future health strategies.

"If countries do not have confidence in the technical competence of WHO,
then its very existence is called into question," said Horton, the
journal's editor. "This study shows that there is a systemic problem
within the organization, that it refuses to put science first."

WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan, who took over the position this
year, will be under pressure to respond to the study's criticism.

"We need a strong WHO," which in recent years "has seen its independence
eroded and its trust diminished," Horton said. "Now is a fabulous
opportunity for WHO to reinvent itself as the technical agency it was
always meant to be."
