According to An Qinghu, director of the Trademark Bureau under the State Administration for Industry & Commerce, China's applications for trademark registration grew by large margins in 2004, reaching 588,000, an increase of 136,000 over 2003, or up 30.04%. The number of applications in 2004 was 2.17 times that in 2001, when China was admitted to the WTO.
